Proper watering is the most important detail for all new plantings. Most plants like to be heavily watered (all soil surrounding the root zone made completely wet) then allowed several days with no water so the soil can become slightly dry again before the next watering occurs. On average, most plants installed in the ground like to be watered heavily 1 time every 5-7 days. However, keep in mind everyone has different soil conditions!

One of the best ways to check soil moisture is with your fingers! To do this, stick your fingers into the soil next to the rootball about 4” deep. If the soil feels damp, then wait before watering again… if the soil feels dry and crumbly, then it’s probably time to water again. The goal with watering is to avoid situations where your plants are either too wet… or too dry for any extended periods of time.

The biggie here is to remember that ALL plants benefit from periodic fertilizer applications.
Trees, Shrubs & Perennials For these varieties, we recommend using our Espoma Plant Tone or Espoma Holly Tone fertilizer 2 times per year (apply once early spring and again late fall).
Annual Flowering Plants & Hanging Baskets are usually heavy fertilizer consumers and like to be fed once every week with a water soluble fertilizer. We recommend a great product called Jacks Petunia Feed.
Vegetables, Fruit Trees and Berries like to be fed 2 times per year with a general purpose fertilizer that also contains some additional micronutrients needed for fruit production and disease resistance (apply once early spring and again late fall). For these plants, we recommend using our Espoma Garden Tone.
Succulents/Houseplants prefer to be fertilized once per month with a water soluble fertilizer such as Espoma Cactus & Succulent Food or Espoma Indoor Houseplant Food.
Succulents are an amazing group of plants that we feel everyone should have! Here are some key tips for growing great succulents:
-Use a high quality succulent potting mix such as Espoma Cactus and Succulent Mix.
-When growing indoors, set plants in areas the receive a good amount of natural light.
-Most succulents like to stay above 50 degrees at all times so be sure to protect from cool weather.
-Succulents do not require much water so only water when your plants become completely dry. In fact, when the become dry, go ahead and wait 2-3 more days before you water them.
-Succulents like friends, be sure to have as many different varieties as you can find:)
